Tear down that old garage? Maybe you don’t need to!
When a homeowner in Toronto’s Beaches neighborhood asked us at bsq Landscape Architects to evaluate an old, neglected garage, the question was simple: Can this be saved, or does it need to come down?
Tearing down is often the easy answer, but it’s rarely the most thoughtful or sustainable one. We chose to investigate first.
Before making any structural calls, we opened up the interior. We selectively removed sections of drywall to perform a thorough diagnostic inspection, checking for hidden mold, water infiltration, and structural compromise.
What we found was encouraging. Despite the musty interior, the essential bones were solid:
Concrete Slab: Intact with no critical cracking or settling.
Framing: Dry and structurally sound.
Roof Structure: Able to be reinforced and retained.
The verdict? Save it.
With a solid framework to build on, we reimagined the space from the ground up—turning a tired storage box into a high-functioning indoor-outdoor amenity.
Indoor/Outdoor Flow: We installed a custom bi-fold door system that completely opens the interior to the surrounding yard and garden, dissolving the boundary between indoors and out.
All-Season Entertainment: The interior was converted into a flexible lounge and gathering space designed for year-round comfort and relaxation.
Integrated BBQ Zone: We incorporated a covered outdoor grilling station directly into the structure, allowing for effortless outdoor cooking regardless of weather.
Concealed Functionality: Built-in, hidden storage solutions keep lawn equipment, cushions, and tools completely out of sight, preserving a clean, modern aesthetic.
By retaining the existing structure instead of demolishing it, we saved a ton of expense and waste and created a distinctive backyard pavilion that feels completely integral to the landscape.
